For the first time in 3 years of commuting i had to stop, and walk back home this morning.
Frosty when i left, then it started raining, which as soon as it hit my handlebars turned to ice.......Of course that means as soon as it hits the road, it turns to ice. On my arse.....Picked bike up then slipped up.
Cars sliding sideways......Time to give up !!! Gingerly walked back home slipping and sliding in the rain ..........Great start to the day!!

I can't get into work (Basingstoke - I was lucky to get out on Monday) but could have sorted out some business in Southampton. That isn't happening.:wahhey:

There was ice storms forecast for today, the conditions are absolutely right and can look spectacular.

The main issue with ice storms though is they can bring down trees and power lines as well as making road conditions treacherous.

I recall driving a van through freezing rain once. I was doing 65mph uphill on a dual carriageway in top gear. Odd I thought, sounds like the rear wheels are spinning?! Then I noticed the ice forming (not disimilar to your picture Matthames) on the wipers. Then lots of frantic waving by people driving the other way, then I had to slow to watch everyone else crashing. Scary as anything.

Been out on the MTB this morning in fresh snow, excellent and easier than walking.

Lots of crashing in Southampton this morning. Also lots of people complaining about the roads not being gritted/salted.
With conditions like there was this morning, all the salt on earth wouldn't have stopped that ice rink appearing before my eyes.
It was pissing down at one stage, and it all turned instantly to ice.
I don't think i've ever seen that before.
I had icicles all over my handlebars.

Turns out the gritters were out in Southampton and then down the m27. It then rained an hour later at 6am and washed it all away. ;)

One of the guys on the radar forums has textile covers for his wheels that deals with ice. No good on a pushbike though

20 car pile up on the m27 this morning
