Top of the more recent list, though, would have to be Beyoncé - Single Ladies, just for the number of lavender versions of the dance which have appeared on YouTube.

It needs:
1. A huge beat
2. A big-voiced diva (male or female - Loretta Holloway, Sylvester etc.*)
3. Length - in fact, the full 12-inches (ahem...)
4. Ebb and flow - an anthem needs to have calmer parts and then come back pounding (double ahem...)
It looks like he was right.
