I wished I was smarter
I wished I was stronger
I wished I loved Jesus
The way my wife does

I wished it would've been easier
Instead of any longer
I wished I could've stood
Where you would've been proud

That won't happen now
That won't happen now

There's a whole lot of singing
That's never gonna be heard
Disappearing every day
Without so much as a word somehow

Think I broke the wings off that little songbird
She's never gonna fly to the top of the world
Right now, top of the world

I don't have to answer
Any of these questions
Don't have no God to
Teach me no lessons

I come home in the evening, sit in my chair
One night they called me for supper
But I never got up
I stayed right there in my chair

There's a whole lot of singing
That's never gonna be heard
Disappearing every day
Without so much as a word somehow

I think I broke the wings off that little songbird
She's never gonna fly to the top of the world
Right now

I wished I'd had known you
Wished I had shown you
All of the things I
Was on the inside

I'd pretend to be sleeping
When you'd come in the morning
To whisper goodbye
Go to work in the rain

I don't know why
Don't know why

'Cause everyone's singing
We just wanna be heard
Disappearing every day
Without so much as a word somehow

Wanna grab a hold off that little songbird
Take her for a ride to the top of the world
Right now

Oh, oh
To the top of the world
To the top of the world
To the top of the world
To the top of the world
To the top of the world
To the top of the world
To the top of the world
To the top of the world

Thanks for posting that, FM. Never heard of him before. Great song and fabulous keyboards.

Here's the achingly, unimaginably sad, Superstar by the Carpenters, written by the god-like genius Leon Russell. Jesus, Karen, you only had to call* and you could have had a chip butty and a swig of my mate's beer!

*although we didn't get a phone line until 1977, but you could have left a message at the buthcher's

Good call Uncle Mort.

I chose "Rainy days and Mondays" but Superstar is really a heartbreaker.

He's pretty awesome. He first came to notice as half of Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, then formed Spearhead, which was basically a soul outfit. These days he does stuff with an ever-changing mix of people, and he's a really excellent songwriter, a social and political activist, and just a lovely guy. The best album he's done, I would say, is 2001's Stay Human, but everything he's done is worth getting.
