Another brilliantly powerful, poignant and unbelievably sad Eric Bogle song. At the end of the first world war the Australian 7th Light Horse Infantry who fought in Palestine were instructed that the horses were not to be returned to Australia and had to be left behind. Instead of leaving the horses to a life of cruelty it was decided that each soldier would shoot his best friends horse.
