RE: the theme, I took it to be about this bit of the op;

Yes the idea was the songs would have a narrator who explains how he (or she) got to the state that he finds himself in, like sitting in a prison cell, or bankrupt, or separated from his family, or in a loving relationship with a transvestite. If not his own, the narrator could tell someone else's story, but the point was that there is a sequence of events, not just emotional responses set in the moment.

I prefer Michelle Shocked's cover of this Jean Ritchie song, but I can't find it.
