Back to the reggae versions of 'pop' songs, I think John Holt became the master at them.
But I did listen to a lot of 'Lovers Rock' back in the mid 80s (my 'relaxed' period in life)

There are lots of good CDs around with Ska collections, some are a bit hit and miss, Youths Boogie is a good one.
I did see a programme on Jamaican music that was interesting. They gained independence in 1962 and were very optimistic and happy so had SKA which is up-beat. After a few years the county hit hard times and they were not so into partying and so the beat slowed down to be Reggae.
I was into 2 tone music as a teenager and just took it as it was but have only quite recently seen that it really is a poor copy of original SKA and rather turned into a novelty act. All good fun still though and still like original and UK derived later copies and spin offs.

I often eulogise Brian Setzer, as very under-rated guitarist, sadly Dave Edmunds also qualifies too
Plus he's an excellent producer/song-writer/singer
(Springsteen thought enough of him, to let him record a song he'd written - before Bruce himself

He once recorded/produced, what was practically a Phil Spector style album; 'Subtle As A Flying Mallet'
I know this is heading away from the thread, btu just listen to the styling/production, that's almost Spectors 'Wall of Sound'
