Not your normal fare for one of these threads, but turn out the lights and wallow in Purcell's chromatic genius in one of his Funeral Sentences. He wrote this in 1694 for Queen Mary's funeral, and it was sung at his own a year later. The really scrunchy harmonies are there to highlight "the bitter pains of eternal death".

In the midst of life we are in death: of whom may we seek for succour, but of thee, O Lord, who for our sins art justly displeased?
Yet, O Lord most mighty, O holy and most merciful Saviour, deliver us not into the bitter pains of eternal death
