I'm sure that there's a serious bike ride somewhere in this thread.........

I do need to get up there, visit mother and get some photos of Castle Market before they knock it down.

Being knocked down? I'm surprised there isn't a preservation order on it, in view of the age of some parts of it, which is pre war.

I remember going round it about 10 years ago, and being rather shocked at just how short everyone was inside the market. And I mean everyone. I'm exactly 6ft and I seemed to tower over everyone.

there's talk of it being knocked down yes, the listing was refused back in January iirc, a shocking shame as it's a great example of concrete architecture from the late 50s and goes nicely with the Park Hill flats over the way that were designed by the same team - the people's republic's internal architecture department in fact.

Still remember getting a comic from the kids stall as we used to call it, then a bottle of pop from the soda fountain......

There has been talk of it being knocked down for many, many years. The plans have just gone along at glacial pace. It's heavily dependent on The Moor redevelopment which is miles behind schedule and nearly collapsed completely at times.

the Smithsons. Who lived in Georgian splendour

I'm 50:50 now, the back is improving but now I have a cold - if it goes to my chest I'll have to bail. I'll keep you posted Simon . . .

In the Boltons, Kensington, actually. Their pile was worth a bob or two.
blimey! Surprising, then, that they were so keen on brutalism for the masses. Here's my (least) favourite.......

A campaign was mounted in 2008 by Building Design magazine and the Twentieth Century Society to get Robin Hood Gardens listed as a historical landmark in order to save it from destruction, with support from Richard Rogers and Zaha Hadid. However, English Heritage did not back the proposal, with its commissioners overruling the advice of its own advisory committee.
The campaign to save Robin Hood Gardens drew very little support from those who actually had to live in the building, with more than 75% of residents supporting its demolition when consulted by the local authority.
In May 2009 the Minister of Culture, Andy Burnham, issued his decision not to list this estate and also granted a Certificate of Immunity from listing which means that the structure cannot be considered for listing for at least 5 years. This ministerial decision endorses the recommendation of English Heritage that Robin Hood Gardens is unfit for listing and does not deserve statutory heritage protection, leaving the way open for Tower Hamlets Council to proceed with its demolition and redevelopment
