there's three Anglia trains an hour from Southend Victoria to Liverpool Street - but they're more expensive and you absolutely must take care on the roundabout just to the south of the station.

I think I chickened out of going round that in December when I was wandering about looking for stuff to photograph. Back West is about the only viable direction from Southend it seems, maybe a loop out to the Wakerings for some bleak photos may be in order.
