Undeniably popular! There's an enjoyably surreal element to standing on a high cliff overlooking a faded Victorian seaside resort while Dolly Parton echoes across the Dyfi estuary and a sea of sequinned cowboy hats bobs about below in something approaching unison. I reckon you could have heard Nine to Five from the summit of Cadair Idris. Line-dancers never look as if they are enjoying themselves, but they soldiered on through the appalling weather on Sunday morning...

Impressive sound system. Given that Barmouth is on the Mawddach Estuary rather than the Dyfi. That's the next one down.

Ah yes - my mistake. But if the mountains weren't in the way, you could probably have heard it at Ynyslas...

My parents will have a house (and field for tents) in Normandy next year....

In all seriousness though, the Bognor route is my favourite and my crocked wrist meant I missed it this year, any chance of two next year?

Ah - this bump reminds me. I have found (subject to the usual humour-this-nutter-and-hope-she-goes-away caveats) a suitable and willing destination Cafe for a possible Cardiff-Mumbles run. A halfway stop is a slightly trickier prospect - wish me luck when I call in at the Mutha Truckers in Bridgend...

Would be nice to see a borderlands ending in mid wales e.g aber or arberareron/cardigan.

The trains are the thing. I was in Aberaeron not long ago enjoying a seafood festival, and a very nice place it would be for a breakfast on the quay, but there isn't a hope in hell of getting people home from there. Aberystwyth would be fine... if only everyone happened to live in Shrewsbury. If you're ringing Arriva and asking about piling a load of bikes on the Trawscambria, then I wish you luck and hope that you have a robust sense of humour...

When I was on the HS1 the other day, it was suggested to me by someone who cycles a bit as well, that perhaps there's a need for a route which stimulates the mind. The idea was a concept ride incorporating some stunning bits of architecture, designed by some top notch architect. Sort of a top 10 designs, that sort of thing?

Oh yes. Good call Adam - I had forgotten about that. A sort of urban meets urbane meets Neo-dellian masterpieces - with a bit of Sarfend thrown in for good measure. It will be a thread 'useless without pictures' that's for sure. Topcat will be tickled!

you mean you haven't been bored to tears by my little architectural disquisitions already? Or is that why you relish TEC duties?

Actually Lambeth LCC does do architectural tours of London, and very worthwhile they are too. I did a couple of my own, but they tended to concentrate on the hidden misery that lies under our wheels. http://westminster.gov.uk/services/environment/landandpremises/parksandopenspaces/st-johns-garden/ - being a case in point. Why, pray, is it raised above the street level?

Funny you should say that. They've recently re-opened the Transporter Bridge in Newport. Think Demoiselles de Rochfort, with a Gwent twist. It's probably not far wrong to suggest it is the most exciting thing in Newport. What the chances are of persuading them to operate it for a ragbag of cyclists en route from Gloucester to Cardiff at 6am, I can't say, but it's definitely worth a gander...

I was wondering if, instead of the SMRbtL after next year's Whitstable - there was an optional ride on to Dover for lunch and the Continent. Calais to say Ypres (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ypres) and back for Sunday evening is quite do-able (and very flat). Hence no need to take any leave from work.

The Menin Gate is a true and powerful counterpoint to HPC.
