My friend and colleague with whom I ride to and from work with was involved in a nasty incident today.
I was not witness to this so the details are fairly sketchy.
He was riding through Leeds city centre on our normal route home down a road called The Headrow. It is a road only for cycles, buses and taxis and has a lot of pedestrians crossing between various shopping centres.
A woman crossed the road right in front of him without seeing him, his reaction, (as mine would have been), was to shout out so he didn't ride right into her. He missed her and looked back, as he looked back he witnessed her be knocked down by a following bus.
He stopped and saw the woman moving on the floor but with a lot of blood on the road.
A police man was also witness to the incident and advised him to move on.
Just seems a little odd that the police man would not take a statement.
I have tried looking for a news report but have found nothing. Does anyone know where I can find out more information on the incident and also the state of the woman.

What a terrible story. There must be a lot of misery from this horrid incident. And of course a woman who has paid the ultimate price. I should be very surprised if the police and indeed the coroner do not want to hear from your friend who I imagine is very upset about this.

That sounds horrible.
I wish people would pay more attention in that area. I have to take it very slowly every time i cycle through there even if it's green lights for the traffic.
I've had many pedestrians pop out in front of me while looking at their phones or talking to eachother. I guess we're harder to spot than a car, also less noisy so it doesnt always occur to them to look in our direction.

RIP :-( Its scary how unobservant folk can be. I used to work near Princes Street, Edinburgh a similar street but only shops one side and a really wide pavement, when somebody came running by me (think the Trainspotting Scene) they then veered right from the inside of the pavement to the roadside and straight into the side of a queue of double decker buses. They were luckier however they were unconscious for a while but were alive.

It would be worthwhile your friend phoning the non-emergency number and reporting what they saw - at least it gives the police a better picture. I'm sure the driver will be distraught.

He received a call last night to advise she had passed and also that he may have to provide a statement.

I have re-read this post. Is there any suggestion that the actions of your friend might be considered contributary to this collision.

If so he needs a solicitor.

Yes, at the very least he's innocent but can advise/give evidence of the pedestrian's inattention. He may well have contributed to the incident, although I cannot see any consequences to him. Ask yourself this. If a driver misses a person in the road and the following driver doesn't, is the first driver at fault?

No, no! I am simply asking the question; I am not suggesting RT's friend was at fault.

It seems from the reaction of the witnessing police man that there is no issue for my friend, however, in his mind if he hadn't of shouted at her she wouldn't have been run over. I'm not so sure about that, what we need to ask is why the bus ran her over, it is a very slow road due to the amount of pedestrians that act like lemmings.

It sounds to me like the sort of terrible incident that happens because of the mixture of traffic and pedestrians. I don't know the area at all so i can't add anything sensible. Your pal needs some TLC and perhaps more.

And this pays no heed to the friends and family of the poor victim; how utterly devastating at any time, but how much more at Christmas. They will never enjoy xmas again; so sad.

RoadieT,

A very sad tale, for the family of the deceased, for your friend, for the bus driver & passengers and for you & any other witnesses, but irrespective of whether or not him shouting at this lady caused her to delay getting off the road, does not lay the blame at his feet.

Without having all the facts, the lady would be alive now had she only checked the road before walking across it, but that being said, if she was visible for your friend to see, the bus driver should also have been able to see her from his elevated position allowing him the time to take avoiding action.

All the facts, including your friend's actions, should be recorded and presented to the Coroner, but IMO your friend reacted instinctively and shouted a warning, as would many of us on here, myself included; and the tragic consequences could never have been anticipated or imagined by him.
