Today I noticed slight sideways play in my front wheel. The wheel nuts are tighter than memsab's purse strings. Any thoughts?
I have learnedLoose/worn bearings. Perhaps time to learn how to do a hub service: http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/categories/hub-service
Bloody hell, the bike's only just 4 weeks old, surely can't be the bearings already.Loose/worn bearings. Perhaps time to learn how to do a hub service: http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/categories/hub-service

There's no QR nuts. This is a bargain basement Halfords mtb, ah'll probably take it in and hope ah get a mech that knows one end o the bike from the other.Tighten the quick release right up and see if it takes some of the play out .
That being the case it's very likely what @Gravity Aided says. My experience of cheap bikes (and cheap replacement wheels) is that the hubs tend to be poorly set up by the factory (often over-tight and notchy) and because of the basic materials and indifferent machining even if the mechanic did take the time to adjust them when unboxing the bike they can sometimes need a further tweak after bedding in for the first few rides. There's no QR nuts.
