Today I noticed slight sideways play in my front wheel. The wheel nuts are tighter than memsab's purse strings. Any thoughts?

Tighten the quick release right up and see if it takes some of the play out .

There's no QR nuts. This is a bargain basement Halfords mtb, ah'll probably take it in and hope ah get a mech that knows one end o the bike from the other.

That being the case it's very likely what @Gravity Aided says. My experience of cheap bikes (and cheap replacement wheels) is that the hubs tend to be poorly set up by the factory (often over-tight and notchy) and because of the basic materials and indifferent machining even if the mechanic did take the time to adjust them when unboxing the bike they can sometimes need a further tweak after bedding in for the first few rides.
Wheel bearing adjustment is a good skill to have. Not difficult but you need to be a bit patient with it and take the time to get it just-so.
