Frozen mouse

I'm having to type this on the laptop, since the mouse on the computer upstairs has frozen. It was working fine one minute, then nothing. I've restartded the computer, and I've tried a new mouse, but to no avail. Anyone got any idea how I can fix it?

if it's a usb mouse - try it in a different port - not only just incase of a faulty port - but should also force windows to recognize it as a new device. You may need to use the keyboard only to get past logging in though, use the tab key and enter key to substitute the mouse

or taped up the optical bit

My USB mouse freezes sometimes after a system restart, but unplugging it and plugging it back in makes it re-find itself, as RH100 says.

Actually the freezing can sometimes mean a breaking cable.
