Right, I have some frozen salmon in my freezer which has "December 20" as sell by date. That might be Dec last year, or very possibly the year before. I want to eat it. Mrs F wants me to chuck it. Whadd'ya think, folks?

That's the sell by date, not the eat by.

Was it pre-frozen or did you buy it fresh but freeze it yourself ?

If the former, then the date implies "chuck it out", if the latter, I would eat it

I was always under the impression that freezing something essentially kept it in the state that it was frozen, so if it was in-date when you first froze it, it should still be in date. When it's frozen bacteria cannot reproduce, and so long as you're not eating it raw it should be fine.

Defrost it, then give it a sniff and a poke before you decide.
If it smells and looks OK, it's probably safe.

If it's pre-frozen - not a good idea to freeze again. Only worth freezing something if it's never been frozen before. If it's from the Dec just gone yes but if it's longer than that it's a bad idea.

Food does continue to degrade in the freezer due to the way the water affects it and it only keeps the bacteria etc down and stops it multiplying any further.
