blimey, I do carry a bottle but it's always empty, other than some sort of sore throat a 45 minute ride isn't going to make me dehydrated

You water bottle boys n girls...how far are you riding? I never carry one (even in summer), only have a commute of 7 miles each way.

12 miles here with 800 feet of climbing. Full 800ml bootle on the way in, and a third full on the way home.

Need more in the morning as the body's filtered & wee'd it out in the morning.

If you only drink water when you're thirsty, it's too late.

I never use a bottle on my commute any more. I did when I first started cycling to work as I sweated like buggery, but that passed after a month or so. Now I do the 45 min ride, and have a drink when I get to work/back home. It's one less thing to remember to do every morning.....talking of which, this morning I got to the end of the street before I realised I'd forgotten my cycling specs----vital at this time of year!

For commuting, taking in a drink in the morning is important - re-hydrates you. Here stops the lesson if it's fugin freezing.... we all stop drinking when we really need to.

with all this freezing of gear I think it is time you carried some GT85 in your cage! or wear some seriously nice merino pants!
Perhaps someone will invent some neoprene covers for your drive gear on the bike?

To stop the water bottle slush try making re-hydration solution (12 level teaspoons of sugar, 1 level tea spoon of salt dissolved in 2l of water) or drop electrolyte tablets in the water bottle at the highest concentration.

three cups of tea most mornings before I set off, at least two, I reckons that'll get me through it, it has so far

jeez

In the summer when it's hot

Just water on my commute. Made it up with warm water this morning so it didn't freeze. My back brake froze though !

You know it's one of those odd, as yet unexplained, matters of physics that the warmer water is, the faster it freezes right?

I didn't believe this when I first heard it, but it's true. There are loads of theories on why, but no definitive explanations yet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mpemba_effect

Surely it is better to be able to have a drink, rather than require a drink and not be able have one. I can't see the problem with carrying a bottle on a commute
