Those of us with hens, or other animals, kept outdoors - remember to make sure that they have a supply of *liquid* water as they still need to drink.

That was today's public service announcement

And thank heavens for that public service announcement as I, and no doubt countless other people with animals kept outside, would never have thought of that:angry:

Here's an idea, how about a windmill, which connects to a similar blade / stirrer at the bottom of a cup. This way, the windier it gets, the more power generated to stir the bottom of the cup; thus you can put in water and not worry about it freezing

You may be on to something there. Especially if I can train the hens to flap their wings to create the wind to turn the blades of the windmill/stirrer. Genius!

Same applies to out door fish ponds in this weather.

The advice used to be to float a tennic ball in the water to maintain an air hole in the surface ice.

Doesn't help if the pond is too shallow though.

Count me in. I'm freezing today , trying to get an extra and much needed radiator in before Christmas. Failure is not an option.

If this thread is still anything to do with water I just want to add that I have put some fresh (i.e. still liquid) stuff out this morning , along with some bread and seeds.

Wouldn't you just have a sheet of ice with a tennis ball in the middle of it ? Usual apologies in advance if i'm being dense.

PSA part 2...

Don't hit the ice on a fish pond to break it... you can kill the fish with the shockwave !

Don't 'over-rug' your horse. Making them sweat in this weather can dehydrate them really quickly. Finley does have his winter blanket on today though.

I don't know anything about horses, and have certainly never "rugged" one, but that looks lovely, especially the half light horse half dark horse effect ?

And it's smiling !!

For most small animals it's no big deal. You don't have water available twenty-four hours a day do you? They get water from their food and will lick snow, ice or condensation wherever they find it.

Maybe a consideration if they're in a hutch and only fed dry food but their water's not very likely to freeze up then anyway.
