Late one night, I got home to find a load of bank / credit cards, etc scattered over the road outside my house.
Being a civic minded person and suspecting foul play, I called my local constabulary and after about 15 minutes of being told my call was important to them, a real civilian call centre person answered and couldn't have been less interested. I agreed to drop them off at my local nick on the way to work the next morning (a ten minute diversion).

Later that day, a detective constable called to discuss my find. Turns out that the cards had been nicked, along with lots of other property and (I think) the poor unfortunates car from an address on the other side of town the previous evening. He asked a few questions, was polite, professional and thanked me for bothering to hand them in.
He had called me on my mobile...the number of which I hadn't given when I dropped the cards in...

I'm not sure why this is a Police problem, no crime has taken place. You have the contact details of the owner, either contact them and return it, or destroy the documents/cards safe in the knowledge that they will get them replaced anyway.

To suggest it is a problem of Police cuts is not valid IMHO they are out solving or preventing crime to the best of their abilities. Here there is no crime, no victim and no justice to be served.
Yeah but they used to do it in the good old days, and in the Rupert the Bear cartoon in the Daily Mail.

Drago my car broke down yesterday when I was on the way to pick up a concrete breaker. So today I have been back to hammer and chisel.(got four inches out before I knackered myself) I thought that as you are such a sharp civil minded person, you could maybe come round and give me a hand. I tried the police, told them SWMBO was under it, but the local inspector just said that as soon as I broke it up a constable would come and check it out.
