Seem to have sorted it after a Saturday morn fettling.
Used those screw on mounts linked to above.
dispensed with MK3 bikebuddy on this bike, great though it is.
Screwed on a Profile Design cage.

I had lying around.
The 1 litre trangia bottle would fit but with only a whisker between it and the mudguard. I could have moved the mudguard in but like it out to accommodate different tyres. Used the 500 mil trangia bottle and padded the cage with two bits of tyre cut from one which thoughtfully blew its sidewall the other day. And added a velcro strap.
All seems solid as a rock but am on a bikeride tomorrow so will test with the bottle full of water.
Does seem to me to be an oversight that Trangia doesn't have a bottle between 600 and 700 or 750mil to fit a normal bottle cage without bodging.
May try to add a pic in next few days.
