Trouble is that those who really need their cars are forced by other drivers to join the melee. It's OK to say they are all idiots for panicking, but whatever they may be doesn't alter the fact that they will drain the pumps dry so if you don't join them you could end up unable to get fuel not because of the queues but because the garage has no fuel to sell. At present I have a full tank, thankfully without queuing, but I will top it up when it gets half way down andf I pass an empty forecourt.

There are people like my mother in law who always tops the car up at 3/4 of a tank. This has just made her even more paranoid.

I wonder how much more fuel you use by running around with the extra weight of a full tank compared to one half full, where I normally keep mine.

I usually fill up to the brim and run to vapours before filing up. In future I'll probably fill up at about 1/4 full for the time being.

My horsebox though I generally only put enough in to last a couple of trips. I don't like to leave much in it cos the thieving gits syphon it out under my nose at night! They've only done it once and as there wasn't much in it, hopefully they won't bother again

Mrs Rapples put £70 in yesterday, we might even put another £70-80 on Sunday when we use it, if there are no queues. It has the added advantage that if we can't get any diesel for the other vehicles I can syphon it out, if the theiving gits don't beat me too it.

totally agree..but I didnt state people panic buying were idiots, what Iam pissed off about is this so called Goverment who are supposed to be running the country instead of causing havoc, and ripping people off - constantly. Its a never ending cycle. Its disgusting.

Tank empty, not guite low enough for the light on the dash and the big fuel pump to bong on the screen, but its empty. Went out to get a b'day card earlier, both stations crammed. Couldn't be bothered to queue for fuel. Now have even less.

At this rate I may have to ride to North Wales this Easter, the family are going a day or two earlier. Shame that. Heh heh.

You need to take the car to buy a birthday card?

Probably about the same as having to make multiple trips to the petrol station, unless you use one which is part of your usual route. There's also an argument which suggests that running on low tanks regularly shortens the life of the pump, but I don't know.

here's an idea. If the government had been seriously concerned instead of trying to whip up a bit of panic to distract people from the granny tax and the pie tax, wouldn't it have been clever to say 'think before making the trip - is it really necessary?' or 'think about car sharing' or 'think about taking the bus' or 'if it's a shorter trip, why not go by bike?'

No, they'd much rather make the point that they will not let the Unions hold the country to ransom. Why should the public at large change their habits for the sake of a small minority who happen at the moment to believe they can control the fuel supply?

I can't think of a government that hasn't ripped us off.

As was pointed out on The Now Show last night, all governments rip you off, particularly the last one. However when Mandleson and Campbell were doing it you knew you were in the hands of professionals, and you had to respect that.

So... ideological posturing and provoking an unnecessary crisis is preferable to seizing an opportunity to turn a dispute into a positive social change that would benefit everyone? Keep 'em coming. Meanwhile, I'll join DZ in laughing like a drain as I whizz past petrol station queues...

The queues and panic buying would have happened regardless, it's only the timing that was influenced. The positive social change that you believe will benefit everyone, is not shared by everyone, only a small minority, and is irrelevant. I can't believe the average tanker driver gives a toss about it.
