I've filled up, as my tank was empty and I'd like to take Small Girl to see her grandparents over Easter. I have already cut down on car usage due to the price of diesel. I hope that any changes that are made don't result in fuel prices going up again. I'm lucky to be able to choose bike or bus rather than car for many of my journeys, but before I was made redundant it would have been a different story.

I think Dave Cameron played a blinder this afternoon by shouting:

"Don't panic Mr Mainwaring, DON'T PANIC!"

I've not worked out his game yet, there must be a plan, he can't be that incompetent surely?
No, he's being very clever.

There is no fuel shortage at the moment, everyone can top their cars on a daily basis. Then if the strike does go ahead it prolongs the period before any effect is felt as most people will have at least a week's supply or more to go on with.

My car can eek 900+ miles from a tank which should last well over a month if I don't venture to see too many people during the working day... how long is a strike expected

Well I know a source of fuel that won't be effected by the tanker strikes ... however the price premium is very heavy & the car that can burn it isn't exactly the sort of thing you want to be driving on a long motorway haul. Still if the worst comes to the worst I know I can jump in & drive for 300 miles without much problem.

I just think sitting in long queues to fill your fuel tank sends out the wrong message to oil companies and the government. We're saying "we don't care what you charge be it £ 1.40, £1.50 or 5 quid a litre we will pay it" I know many people have no choice, but others could try doing without. Incidentally i did sit in a queue for petrol in 2000.

I've been leaning to this as a conspiracy theory, LOL:

Government needs a quick injection of cash, massive deficit - people really cutting back due to the Government chops they're making so the economy has "stalled". Where to get the money from..? Then a golden goose - fuel tankers are in uproar about safety conditions, lets make a statement to the press about storing fuel and filling the tanks right up.

The Government must know something, right? Otherwise they wouldnt be advising drivers to do this.

So now we have the Fire service on the radio saying "PLEASE RETRACT" to the government minister who put out the statement, they dont want to be dealing with fuel storage fires. We have the AA also saying "please dont panic, it will just make a mess". We also have a Government, same as the last, who are not giving out sensible advice to drivers as to alternative means of transport.

It doesn't bode well whether its intentional or a massive cock-up.

In this "I'm alright Jack" society, I'd hate to see how the public would react in the event of real national emergency.

When push comes to shove, it seems it's everyone for themselves.
