'Tis done. My brand spanking new Specialised Allez 16 has ended it's very short life of being a lightweight road bike (a tad under 10 kg on arrival), and has been transformed into my 2nd commuter machine (a still fairly light weight 13.8kg). I've fitted crud road racer 2 mudguards, seat mounted rack and panniers, new pedals with toe clips and straps, Durano plus tyres (note how I even lined up the wheel/tyre writing......anyone else do that?) pump/bottle holder, front and rear lights, mirror, computer, and a new, very comfortable seat.

It still feels pretty lightweight (my Dawes Tanami weighs in at 20kg!) and I'm really really happy with it. I went to work on it twice last week, and after those two 20 mile round trip commutes I was amazed at just how comfortable it is. I'm new to sti shifters and my initial worries about braking/gear shifting were unfounded. It's actually quite easy to brake hard with my hands on top rather than reaching for the drop downs. It's also nice to have 3 hand grip options, top, front or drop down. My Dawes 'crow man' style means you can only ride on the grips......never worried me, but the Allez feels more 'roomy' than the hybrid! I was also worried about the rough roads around here, but it's not much more harsh than the suspension forked Dawes. I wonder if that's down to the carbon forks doing their job?.

I'm grasping at straws to find a fault, but I do feel that the Allez 16 is a little under geared. I only have a couple of shallow downhills on the way to work, but I maxed out at 34 mph in top gear and feel I could've gone a bit quicker with another gear or 2! It doesn't worry me too much, but if I regularly did downhill stretches I'd be looking at changing the gearing.

Anyway, I'll still ride the Dawes most days, but when the sun if forecast, I'll be on the Allez, taking the long way home! Here's some pics. Me very happy!

Oh, just realised I'm missing something. I need to get hold of another meer cat to complete the bike!

A thing of great beauty.

Interesting saddle. Is that the original or one you have added?

It's new. The o.e. seat wasn't too bad and I wasn't desperate to replace it, but I went to halfords and bought the Panniers £24.99 and pedals £17.99. The seat should have been £19.99, but it's buy 2 get one free.....so in effect I got the seat for 2 quid!

Those mirrors look good - what are they? I have a Blackburn bar-end mirror which works great on my flat-barred bike but not quite so well on drops.

Edited because i have 2 left hands and can`t spell
Sweet !

I do like the idea of the mirror.

I commuterized a Carrera tDF 08 i got of ebay with the same sort of rack+ gaurds then added SPD pedals and lights .As for a saddle i use a charge Spoon as i find it a lot better than overly padded saddles. In fact looking at your piccies you have the same bags as me !

Today i changed the seatpost rack to a standard rack even though it has no top rack points by putting one of the upper rack arms through the rear reflector mount as it is not a load bearing bracket it (should) be fine , i found seatpsot racks carried the weight to high for my liking making the bike a bit unstable when cornering or hacking up a hill.
If your spinning out at 34 mph i would suggest your not carrying enough :biggrin:Get enough "essentials " and you will soon slow down.......

As for meerkat...arf arf
What about a hamster with a bazooka to stop close overtakes..

What does that look like? All square and pixellated?

As for the saddle you should have got one of these http://www.realseat.com/ - I saw one on a parked up bike the other day in town and at first I thought it was a weird pannier, then an ironing board, then I realised it was a saddle/seat

Anyway, looks like a nice setup (have been wondering about a mirror myself) - I have been toying with the idea of getting a road/hybrid bike for the commute such as the Allez (currently on a mountain bike - which given the number of potholes doesn't seem inappropriate!).

Ha ah ! the joys of auto spell!

That saddle might make overtakers give you more room though , especially if tipped with a sharp object that can scour the paint work

Very nice indeed! How do you find the seat-post rack? I've always thought they wouldn't be stable enough for some reason.

Also, what light is that? I like the way it mounts to the stem.

The seat post rack seems pretty sturdy. It's no lighter than a traditional rack, but at least it'll be less faffing about if I get a puncture. The light mounts front and rear are home made from plumbing 'push fit' pipe wrapped in insulating tape, taped on to the stem/rear rack. It's a Mr bodge-it job, but it works a treat. The lights just say 'torch' on the front and they came free with the rack http://cgi.ebay.co.u...e=STRK:MEWNX:blush:T they're pretty darn bright and have built in reflectors, so the o.e. reflectors have been discarded

I think i already said that i found that seatpost racks are ok but i found the weight a bit to high when cornering fast you can feel the weight shifting, mind you i do carry a lot of "essentials ".

The ebay add says £20 worth of lights , a bit overoptimistic you can get them for £4 from my favourite light shop
