Yesterday I got a letter that I am no longer entitled to a student loan.

I'm doing so well at the moment and getting really good grades, it would be a shame to drop out now. If I continue at the rate that I am, I'm heading for a 1st or a high 2.1.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience of applying for funding other than from the student loans company?

I am due to go to student services today to go and pick up an application for other funding. I will take my letter along with me to see if they can recommend any other help.

I'm trying to be positive about it all.

Student Services are your best bet.

Why are you no longer eligible for a loan?

Will this be at the beginning of the academic year or is it for the final term?

There will be things such as hardship funds but if it's end of the year the pot might be empty. May be worth trying to find a bursary of some kind from an organisation or charity that may be interested in your studies.

Good luck Gromit - keep your chin up, you'll find a way.

I'm off to student services before duties today, was just wondering if anyone else has managed to apply for other sources of funding.

direct gov page might be interesting but a quick glance doesn't give much sources.
When I was studying I got the student loan so can't comment, however when I was thinking of doing a masters some time ago I looked inot charities/workplaes/communtiy groups that were willing to put some cash forward if they had an interest in your area- you'd be surprised but i'm not sure if this is relevant to your course

I had a look at that web page applied for one of the Horticulture awards and sent off for an application for another.

Have also thought of getting a career development loan, however the interest is too high at 9.9%. I'm leaving that option as my last resort.

On the up side of things, I have a few months till the start of my second year in September to find something.

Your student services (and possibly library) should have a book which lists all the sources of charitable funding for students. It's along read, but it contains all the relevant information such as eligibility criteria, contact details, amounts, critical dates etc. May be worth a look.

Ooh, nasty news, sorry to hear it.

Sponsorship from a business relevant to your degree? You'll have to work it off for them afterwards though.

Ad in Private Eye? (Do they really bring in money?)

I know someone who already had a degree so had to pay the fees for vetinary science herself (perhaps same situation as you). It took her three years to sort out funding, but that may have been for larger amounts. There are charities and things that'll pay but in the experience of my friend it took a painstaking amount of time to line up. Best of luck, that's a horrid situation to be in.
