Anyone else cycle up/past some real strange cycle lanes ?

Here is the one I pass ( I go on the road).
Road is slightly uphill, dual carriageway with a lot of parked cars.

The cycle bit in the black circle goes onto the pavement then about 150 yards later back onto the road.
Funny thing is apart from being pointless is that the cycle bit is normally blocked by parked cars anyway from the residents.

Its a new road layout prob about 2 years old and it baffles me.

Lots. There's a collection somewhere on the net (Warrington cycle network site?) of a lot of them and they're hilarious.

Notable ones around here include cycle lanes 3 yards long, cycle lanes on pavements that run across tree roots and dodge around trunks, a point where two cycle paths cross on a blind corner so they've made one of them keep right just to confuse everyone and make the corner that bit more blind, etc. etc.

I remember reading somewhere that councils could claim EU funding over and above the cost of installing the cycle lanes - perhaps that's why some of them are as much use as a chocolate tea pot at a barbeque!

I don't have that many cycle lanes around my way. I do have one which lasts for about 100 yards with an ASL that every driver ignores, but other than that its roads or shared use paths, the real bane of my life.

Went past again today - It's about 100 yards long runs across the pavement and back to the road !

The truly crap ones aside the ones that bother me are those that run along a road but end/re-start every time you reach a pinch-point such as a traffic island. Surely that's where you need the lanes the most. The rest of the time the road's wide enough to not need the cycle lane. In my view they are all pointless unless they get you completely out of traffic and allow you to ride for a decent amount of time without having to arse about. Most dedicated paths don't last for long until you have to perform some highly inconvenient task to remain on/re-join the path

It is truly amazing just how much money council highway engineers manage to waste on useless cycle facilities, especially when with a little thought they could do something useful...

There is a segregated two way cycle lane in Camden which is truly horrendous as it requires cyclists to suddenly swap sides. I don't go that way often but I was absolutely gobsmacked when I came upon it. It is beyond stupid and genuinely dangerous. Luckily, as with many of these schemes, it does not appear to be much used. I will try and post a picture of it later on.

Actually if Google Streetmaps works you can see it here
