What is the furthest distance you would consider commuting everyday?

There is a job I am looking at that will be a 20 mile bike ride away, however the route there is pancake flat apart from one rather big hill 1/3 of the journey there. I do also have the option of going part way by public transport, which if I get the position I will be doing to begin with.

I must admit I'm finding my current 45 mile round trip fairly painful to do, but then I do a physical job on top of the cycling as well.

I cycle 14 miles in now (45 mins), and it wasn't a stretch to do the 17 miles to my old place of work (I took the new job so I'd cycle). I don't see 20 miles being an issue. My route sounds similar topography to yours.

One hour in one direction is pretty much my limit (currently my commute is little over half an hour so I don't really know how flexible my limit would be in practice.)

Personally, a 40 mile round trip would be about the maximum I would be happy with.

A 20 mile round trip would be ideal...not too short or too long imo.

When younger I did 30 miles round trip across London, helped by the fact that driving and public transport was no quicker

if it's flat and not much traffic and lights etc why not, I reckon 20 miles of open road might not take as long as 10 of heavy urban route

I used to do 25 miles each way but that was a limited time post so I knew it would only be temporary when I started. It hurt, and I wouldn't want to do that sort of distance permanently but that said I missed it when I went back to my 12 mile commute. 20 is probably the furthest I would consider, depending on the roads, 20 miles on flat dual carriageway is a different kettle of halibut to 20 flat miles on narrow, flint covered lanes.

I would agree with Tommi that rather than distance time is the deciding factor. I would also consider 1 hour to be the golden figure if you were going to do this 5 days a week throughout the year.

I also did about 25 miles each hilly way for 18 months, 3 -4 days a week and it's bloody tedious. A journey of 12 busy miles took about an hour and I did that for much longer. The ideal journey is around 30 -40 minutes if you want to mix fitness with commuting and can be kept up indefinitely, through all seasons and varying health.

Unlike leisure cycling, you'll become familiar with every inch of a long commute and anticipate each mind-numbing yard of the journey ahead.

I do a 34mile round trip at the moment. Not sure i would choose to do much more through a city as it's so stop start!

I agree. At first I was going to say 20miles, but 1hr sounds like a better way of measuring it..

My current commute is 8miles each way, fairly hilly and I can do it in less than 30mins. However, I would be happy to up that to 16miles each way and an hour of cycling. When I first started the 8mile (each way) commute it took more like 45-50minutes

My job is a desk job and I also have the option of cutting out 5miles of that commute by using the train.

I always think in terms of time rather than miles too, I could cycle 20 miles on flat ground or half that over hills in that time so it depends more on the route/time taken then the mileage.

Ive riden to work all my life virtualy until this year. The last 8 years 84 mile round trip 3 times a week. 2 1/2 hour. trip more if the wind was in the wrong direction. Time not really a factor as much as the lovely route I rode. When I was younger I commuted across london. I know which one I preffered. I still try to ride into work one day a week, could I go back to 3 days ? Probably not, but I think you ll find its what you get used to. Being able to vary the routes helps immensly on longer commutes. I have about 8 to choose from, with about an extra 1/2 hour to add on the longest.
