I don't have a 510 but a 500. That uses a breadcrumb type route thingy and it works great! I have used it for a 70miler on holiday and it got me round no worries. I do like to view my ride on a map first before going though as this gives me reassurance as I pass through villages etc as reference points.

I create routes with plotearoute not ridewithgps. As long as I save the route as a tcx file, the 510 will give me advance warnings of turns, as long as I'm on the route. If I stray from the route there's just a noise.

Has anyone ever got mapping to work on a 510?
The online guides for free mapping generally start with the 520, but the 510 can display raster map images behind the breadcrumb trail. It won't give you navigational/routing functionality, but just the image would be useful.

The snag is you have to find an offline mapping tool to download the map "tiles" from OSM or elsewhere, and then copy them over USB to the 510.

I tried several times and found the storage of the 510 to be limiting , and that even when on the device it struggled to display the images.
Possibly my map files were just too detailed/large.

Update!!!!
Garmin Basecamp is a 'free' tool to download maps to your Garmin Edge, and it supports the 510.
Although with only 20 Mbytes of storage you can't get much of a map on there.

And the big snag of basecamp is it charges for maps. i've found a way of importing free OSM data, but it seems to be a layer that lacks roads!!!! Or possibly it's a just a poor colour scheme. Gonna have to look closer at customising my map options.
