Hello,
I have been trying to download some MTB routes of the Wyre Forest from Garmin connect but each time I load them to my GPS it says route truncated and then seems to have only saved half the route. I have to save the route to my PC first then onto the GPS as Garmin connect does not like my operating System/ Browser. If I then up load to Bikehike online it shows the full route with out a problem. Any ideas anyone ?
All previous routes made by myself (on bikehike) work fine !

Thanks all

Sounds like the route has more waypoints than your etrex can handle.

My Gps can store 500 way points but It says that it can store 10,000 points as a track log ,does this mean I can store way more way points as a track log than a route ( I'm a little confused to the terminology here) I've used the Etrex for Motorcycle Green lane routes over 70 miles in the past without problems

My old etrex was funny like this. From experience, it seems that the 10,000 waypoints were divided by the amount of routes it could hold - ie 20... which equates to 500 per route. However as the tracking normally all occurs on the same file you get 10,000.

Another CC member had the same problem with his LEJOG routes, in that all 17 stages were being truncated. I had a look at the files for him and they were all well over 500 waypoints. I simplified them all to less than 500 waypoints and they all worked perfectly after that.

My old Etrex can store 500-odd waypoints too, but the limit for any one route is 125. The limits on tracks are much higher, with about 500-odd trackpoints per track, so I started using tracks instead of routes. I found that if I exceed the trackpoint limit for a track, the GPS discards alternate trackpoints to get back within the limit. (I suppose if necessary it would discard 2/3 of them or 3/4, whatever.) You can't label trackpoints, but that doesn't bother me.

All sorted now ,I had a look at my software Gebabbel (linux) and worked out that there was a option to simplify the routes to 500 way point to suit Garmins now it shows the complete route on the Garmin. If you never hear of me again, me an my son will be riding round forever in the Wyre forest. I'm guessing the routes I had before for Green laning had already had this done hence I never had a problem. Your points seem to make complete sense about the 10,000 way points being divided between the 20 routes.I came back on to post my finding only to find you had done the same and beat me to it with your previous experience.

Thanks very much for the help.

Glad it's sorted. Enjoy the ride!

At least you notice before you set off. My leaning curve was a bit steeper, as I found the line I was following on the screen just stopped mid-ride in an area I wasn't familiar with

I found automatic trackpoint reduction a bit annoying in practice because sometimes software discards useful points at junctions. For instance a km road to a t-junction and then a 90 degree turn with another km or so down the other road might be simplified to a diagonal across the field between them! I always simplify my tracks manually now, making sure that all junctions and roundabouts still have trackpoints to mark them.

Bet that was fun/disappointing !

Thanks again for the help

It's a bit more complicated than that...
All of that is why I never follow tracks on the etrex, only routes. Using routes (which does mean you have to splash out on some maps) also means you get good quality turn-by-turn directions.

Tracks are easy enough to follow, no different to following routes. No maps needed for either
