Garmin Etrex Legend C GPS

Does anyone have any experience of this GPS unit.

I have had a brief look at one and it seems to be able to plan routes in advance and also track where and how fast you have ridden ( no cadence though)

They are colour and come with a case map for £129.99, which is a lot less that getting a Garmin Edge 605 or 705.


Just wondering if they are working using on a road bike?

Garmin Etrex Legend/Vista are much favoured by the audax community. They do what folk want, without all the extra training aids of the Edge series. I am still deliberating [=procrastinating ] over what sort of GPS I can justify, if any . One point to remember is that most Garmin units need the additional purchase of some maps, as the basic ones supplied are just that - very basic and not suitable for planning rides. Maps on CDs can be used on the PC (for route planning), micro cards not - or so I understand.

as above, the built in map is almost useless. there are good free maps here

i have a vista hcx and use it almost all the time for my 100 mile rides plotted on the pc. i do occaisionally let the gps plan a route but it seems to favour main roads.

I've had two of these.

Both suffered with the rubber bumper band sliding off in a sticky mess on hot days.

They have the reputation of switching off due to vibration.

Battery life is OK.

You can get a Garmin Etrex Legend HCx for not much more and I believe it has a more sensitive GPS receiver than the 'C' model. I have one and it is great.

(the switching off due to vibration is cured with a little bit of tape that stops the unit from rattling in the mount)

i upgraded to a vista hcx froma vista c. the resolution is better and reception a lot better under trees.
i got a good discount at cotswold outdoor with my ctc membership card.
i did have alot of trouble with earlier models switching off at the slightest bump. theer is a fix on the internet taht involves a bit of soldering and a capacitor.
you'd think garmin would make them vibration proof for use on bikes.

The RAM mounts are better than the Garmin...seems to solve the random switch-off prob.
There is a sticky over on YACF for a mod of the original m/bike one, but I think they do one for bike bars now too.
