So completed my first sportive today and using my my trusted garmin 810 i recorded the ride and get home and think right time to upload to strava. On plugging the device into the computer i found that the device randomly recorded just under 4 miles of the ride (not even the beginning of the ride) not the 63 miles i cycled. Frustrated is an understatement as this is my longest ride by 20 miles.

Go do the ride again ... to make sure the 810 has traced you ..

Only ever had issues when Garmin released new firmware. The advice is not to upgrade until some other fool has tested it.

Once lost part of a Sportive, but was able to patch the error in the file, which meant that part of the ride was a straight line between the corrupted pointa, but the overall mileage was OK, just a little short.

Only happened when I forgot to press start after a stop or when the ride tcx file was corrupt (which has happened a few times but I have managed to recover it).

I've had it wanting to switch off repeatedly on a long ride. I share your frustration!

I think this is what happened to mine. As when crossing the finished line and hitting the stop button the it did seem like the grim shut off but the the screen came to life and asked if i wanted to save the ride.

No issues of this nature with my 510, despite being an early adopter in the software update stakes.

My 510 is being replaced by Garmin as we speak though, as most of my rides fall short of the elevation that my mates 510 does and bought from same place on same day. Mine has me a few hundred feet under water for most of my ride too!

What I am getting at is, if it happens again, Garmin are really good with their support and warranty. Even out of warranty replacements are considerably cheaper than buying a new unit.

Good to know about warranty as my garmin is only about 4-5 months old. Hopefully won't happen again but if it does I will drop garmin a line.
