I would hold off until some people actually get their hands on them and give reviews. And i'm talking about real riders, not review sites.
Garmin are known for not having products ironed out when they release them.

I'm considering the new Sony cam revealed last week at IFA show, looks good to me with some nice enhancements to the original. I'm put off by the brick shape of the go pro when on top of the helmet, good footage though. Is it true contour went belly up a few weeks back?

What makes you consider the Sony cam? Obviously there's no footage from either this or the Garmin cam but on paper the Sony apart from the (gimmicky??) NFC appears pretty bulk standard.

For that price it should be able to send a HUD of the rear cam footage to your specs.
;) your probably right or should be but I doubt it!

The previous generation which I believe the boys in blue use (i work with cycle cammer 4chords, he mentioned he saw the police have them on the cycle march the other day) gives very good footage and this one being even smaller and lighter should IMO deliver well too, I like the form factor, fairly discreet. Not keen on having the cam on display like the go pro is. What ever I get next will be a step up from the chilli tec 720hd from maplin I currently have lol

Also like the resolution it can record in now:
Movie Resolution

1920×1080/60P(PS) ,1920×1080/30P(HQ),1280×720/30P(STD,SLOW,SSLOW),640×480/30P(VGA)

Don't see the need for 4k yet.

The new Sony HDR-AS30V has been released in the US, about $300, so will probably be £300 here.
Hopefully some comparison videos will start appearing soon.

The new GoPro4 is on it's way, apparently 4k@30fps, 1080p@120fps and 720p@240fps, possible release in the US in October in time for xmas.

The functionality the Go-Pro needs is a decent battery. I have a Go-Pro3 Black edition and the battery life at the highest resolution is dire.

4K seems a bit gimicky. I'm told it isn't the resolution that's important but the bit rate which on the GoPro is appalling low at 4K. It's why a broadcast 4K camera is £30k and the GoPro £300!
While looking around for a small good quality camera I came across a Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera. It's only 1080p but boy oh boy is the film quality stunning. Downsides are it's a bit bigger (mobile phone sized) with no housing and about twice the price so not really suitable.

Anyway unless GoPro come out with anything that beats the Virb Elite within the next 6ish weeks then it's the Garmin for me. Being able to connect sensors is the killer feature.

That is one of the reasons I did not buy one, when riding two hours or so into work it is a real pain having to stop and change batteries, my old Go-Pro 2.just about manages it.

4k is a little gimmicky as regards watching it at that resolution but 4k allows a user to zoom in and have a 1080p resolution video.
