ok am female, who can,t read a map, would like to get garmin, don,t need all the little extras, just need map, so that i can plan routes, would like to do some long distance ride, ie york to glos in summer, help
Bryton rider50 also does mapping and can be found cheaper than both garmins. The trade off is pretty crap stand-alone software.
Both available on ebay/amazon new/sh. If you wish to buy new (and without speed/cadence/HRM sensors then you can buy un-bundled and probably the cheapest at handtec
The CTC did a review of the Garmin Etrex 20/30 recently and I think they wrote they were very good, if you do not want the bicycle specific functions of the Garmin Edge 500/800.
Garmin 705 with HRM, cadence and full UK and Ireland mapping can be had new for £218 on the bay if you get serious it will do ant+ power . The screen is not a touch screen like the 800. Dated to some but a real bargain imho
I have a 705 and I certainly would not consider the map as the best feature. I have used it a few times as a Sat Nav - take me to ...xxx..., but have not been terribly impressed by its routing. Indeed, as a result, if I am in fresh country and do not know the roads, I take a map in my pocket.
