So I've taken delivery of my Garmin 500 and all is well...almost.

My problem is that my club put their club runs up on Bikely, and as the longer winter training rides start, I'd quite like the breadcrumb trail. I know I need to download the GPX file and convert it to .tcx (?), but I can't.

My first problem is that my laptop just refuses to recognise the .gpx file and I've got know idea how to rectify this. I click 'download gpx' on Bikely and then I'm asked which program I want to use - problem is, I've no idea. I've tried Excel but it declares it is 'not a win32 application'. Can anyone shed any light on what I should do do get this to work?

Getting ahead of myself, once I've got the gpx file, do I then need software/ web tool to convert the file to a Garmin compatible file before copying it onto my device?

All help most welcome

Plug the Garmin 200 into your pc then goto My Computer and find the Garmin then open the Garmin folder then theNew Files folder and put the GPX file in there once that is done disconnect the 200 from the PC. Now start up the 200 and find the course in courses and select and it will convert the file so you can use it.

Many thanks everyone, I know how to do it now...but I still can't get it to work. I'm guessing that the problem is that the gpx file is being saved in Excel. Should this be the case? What's the alternative program I should be using?

Normally I can work these things out, but this one's drivimg me mad (which means it's inevitably a simple solution!)

No it should be just saved as a gpx file, not excel.
Have you a link to the file you want to save on Bikely.

you don't open the file you save it, just right mouse click on the link and use save as to save it to your pc then put it on to your garmin as I described.

That's what I thought. I think the issue is the default on my laptop, but I can't get the files to run as .gpx - they just revert to being held in an unopenable excel file.

Really appreciate all the help.

It's going into my downloads file as a gpx file but saved within excel. I'm not quite sure what's happened to cause this. Think I'm going to walk away from it for a while and hope that magically it starts working properly later!

Down load the gpx and dont try to open it, it should stay as a gpx and then use something like gpsies to convert it to a tcx

as phil has said, there's no need to convert to tcx when transferring to the 500 as the 500 changes it to tcx automatically.
