It was basically exactly the same as before. Only the ad breaks were different.

Part of me was hoping it would be a bit more different but I guess they don't want to alienate the diehard fans.

I like Prue Leith. I especially liked her choice for the Technical challenge. I also think you need to give her time to grow into the role. Don't forget that the old team had seven series to develop their shtick. We've been watching some repeats of the very first series on Gold recently and the whole thing is very unpolished and lacking that sparkle.

First show and what do we think?

Noel and Sandi are working as a double act, Prue is no Mary - she lacks the humour and cheeky glint.

The standard of the contestants is very good, some of the show stoppers were as good as I've seen in a final before.

It's the ad breaks that I can't get the hang of.

Mrs S was a fan of the old prog - and likes the new prog too. Thinks Noel Fielding is great...

I agree with all you say, it was deliberately familiar and the theme seemed to be continuity. We will see how the relationships develop and if the dynamic changes, but I wonder about Prue, I respect her knowledge and enjoy her work but she has a reputation for toughness so she is going to have to show a lighter, more smiley side.

Or were they?
I like my cakes to look like cakes. It's GBBO, not that American Cake Wars travesty. Anything that requires serious amounts of fondant and modelling chocolate (whatever that is) at the expense of a moist sponge is just..wrong.
That was the first time I've seen widespread use of airbrushing, I felt it did show off the artistic abilities of the contestants, but you are right, too much of that to hide technical failings and it just becomes about showing off.
