Hi, any tips please - my gear cable in my ultegra shifters broke in the shifter itself - how do I get it out? Thought the cable was snapping 10k from home but it broke completely 800m from home - so pushing the old one out will be a bit of a challenge. Any hints? (see photos)

I sympathise. Same thing happened to me with a 105 right shifter. I prodded and poked around for ages and then decided it was a write off. I had a spare shifter to fit so I took it all down to my LBS with instructions "Sort out the broken cable if you can. If you cant, fit the new shifter".

Using their magic LBS powers they did manage to sort it out. I have no idea how.

In short: I don't know. Bus somebody might.

Depending on the generation of Ultegra shifters, there is a panel underneath the body of the shifter which can be removed by unscrewing a very small, black screw. It's awkward to see but should be obvious with the shifter off the bike, as you have it. Here's a video showing it:

Once the panel is off it's very easy to clear up the broken gear cable strands.

If yours doesn't have that panel then ... less easy!
