Depends what you're trying to achieve, for ambling along at whatever pace it could well be fine but a 28% jump is almost the same as dropping from a 39t to a 30t chainring. For a lot of riders that's unacceptably large & could leave them spinning out in one gear but really struggling to keep going in the next one.

Now where the Rohloff stands out compared to other hub gear solutions, it seems to be more aimed at MTBing where you actually want fairly fine grained changes at the low end where as the other solutions seem to be more aimed at the leisure riding market.

Just reading through this and trying to work out a direct comparison between an Alfine 8 (say 48/20t cogs on the Alfine) and my compact 50/34 12/27 set up.
Anyone bright enough to let me know how the two stack up? Beggared if I can work it out!

Right I've had a go - is this right?

Compact low: 34/27 = 1.25 x 24 = 30.22
Compact high: 50/12 = 4.17 x 24 = 100

Alfine ... no idea
