Gear problem

I went out on my older bike yesterday as my new one was in for a service in the shop. When i go into the biggest ring on the front after about 20 metres it seems to drop down to the middle ring so constantly found myself holding it in gear with one hand . Is this a cable/shifter problem or a gear problem. Thanks

Could be either, where were you on the cassette when you selected the 'big' ring at the front.

Sounds like you need to increase cable tension. 1/4 or 1/2 a turn on the barrel adjuster.

A quick tweak of the down tube adjuster and all will be well. If it doesn't have one undo the clamp bolt on the mech and pull the cable tighter.
