Gear slips once (after changing) when powering

For a while now after changing gear if I use a lot of power, I get the sound as if changing gear without easing off. It seems to be adjusted well and changes smooth and quick. Once it has happened it won't repeat until I change gear again. Haven't been able to determine if it is any particular gear/change. It can be either immediately after changing or some time after - when I increase the power.

Everything is reasonably clean. I have new cables (inner + outer) for the rear.

I have tried readjusting the tension on the rear cable but it doesn't seem to help.

I want to try and get this fixed this weekend. Any ideas what the problem might be or what to look for?

Are the pawls in the free hub engaging properly? It sounds a bit like one of my bikes at the moment. Just occasionally, after coasting along or perhaps after a gear change there is a crack that sounds and feels like the free hub slipped a tooth. It could be your problem?

Sounds as if you may be over shifting slightly and the chain is trying to ride up off the chosen sprocket with the shifter depressed.

Check the indexing, also spin and don't grind when you change, putting the pressure on too soon can make for clunky shifting.

Had a bit of a look and now wondering if it is the front gears which were slipping and need adjusting. Hence why adjusting the rear made no difference. So used to the fronts not needing attention. DUH!

Thanks for replies. Was starting to wonder if I had some worn/broken parts.

Check your BB/cranks for sideways movement.
By pure co-incidence i rode my hybrid for the first time in ages yesterday...and had exactly the same problem when pulling away or really standing on the pedals. A sudden slip, then ok. Shortly after, i thought the cranks seemed a tad loose and checked...there's about 2mm movement side to side. BB's come slightly loose, i can see it's come slightly out out the threads.
Reminds self to tighten it all up tomorrow
