I did try it out earlier with clutch in off and on position, it made no difference. However, when playing around with the clutch on/off it did feel like the clutch tension was very overkill. I'm waiting on a new stem to get the handlebars in the right position before cabling it up. Pushing tension into the mech by hand isn't fun!

Good suggestion Sharky, I will let the chain wear out naturally first and then try an 11 speed when it's time to replace.

A solution might be using an 11 speed chain. Internal width is the same, but external width a tad smaller. May just be enough to fix the problem. I would however just live with the issue. You'll only be using the small sprocket on fast descents.

I was thinking along these lines too - excuse my asking but are you sure you are using a 10sp chain? The one on there does look "tight" to the adjacent sprockets and it does sound a bit clunky when pedaling forward . . .

Too me it sounds like the excess noise is coming from the chain ring at the front rather than the rear mech. I swoped the stock 32 tooth for an Amazon 34 tooth chain ring. In this fitment it was very difficult to find a bigger shimano chainring.

I’m not 100% sure on the chain to be honest. The entire groupset was brand new from an eBay seller in china - so I’m certainly taking a gamble on it. The seller seems to be churning out 100’s of shimano group sets on eBay with good reviews so I thought I’d take a punt. Everything arrived without any shimano packaging at all, but from what i can see they are shimano items or extremely good fakes - even down to the weight that ties perfectly to the shimano quoted weights for the each part. But acknowledge this was a sketchy purchase for sure. The chain was sealed in a unlabelled plastic wrapper - so it could be intended for another speed. I might get the calipers out and measure it / check against what a normal 10 sp chain should measure

There’s lots of YouTube videos showing how to spot Shimano fakes. I would bet good money the chain at least is a fake.

Thanks I'll certainly take a look at those you tube videos - just for my own curiosity. However I made this purchase fully expecting this to not be 100% legit, but if they at least performed well enough for my intended use (to potter about with the kids around local parks / trails) I was fine with the gamble and worst case I could make a claim with ebay if it was not fit for purpose.

No the worse case scenario the chain snaps and you face plant. I bought 2 that came in what looked like genuine package, it wasn’t. Once I realised I binned them and put the cost down to experience. Halfords are usually pretty competitive on price for things like chains with free postage.
