My Ultegra right shifter has gone. I just get a harsh cracking sound when I try to shift, and no movement in gear either up or down.

Does it sound like a simple fix, or possibly something more serious?

Off to the LBS once the electrician has left...

Has the cable snapped?
Is there any pull in the cable?
If not then I fear the worse i'm afraid.
Shimano STI's are not very self fix friendly.

The cable hasn't snapped and there's no pull or change in tension.

My gears have been playing up, but I just thought the cable was needing replaced or tightened - not been able to shift into the lowest gear, or the two highest

Take the cable right out and then try to shift.

You should see the drum rotate where the cable is introduced and there should be no noise.

If there is no movement then it's a goner and there are no repairs available.

A set of Ultegra shifters is £330 @ RRP, you can't usually buy just right or left
A friendly LBS should fit for that price, as you can buy them online and fit them yourself for £250.

Thankfully the problem wasn't with the shifter; it was the cable. It was all frayed and had wrapped around itself, it was also pretty close to snapping. Guy in the LBS said he had never seen anything like it before. Cost me £100 for a new cable and bar tape. Felt like they took the piss cos they missed out on a £300 shifter sale.

That's the good news. The bad news is they said I need a new chainring, cassette and chain. So looking at around £300 after Christmas.

Said the chain should be replaced every 1,000 miles, which is every 6 weeks :cursing:

Every 1000 miles? What are you riding through, grit?
