Out of curiosity, what cassette is fitted currently? Only ask because most 8 speed cassettes on new bikes seem to come with 32 teeth now.

If it's a 52/39 crank, that's the sort of gears the pros use, often paired with a 11-28 at the back, not what I would consider friendly. If my assumption is correct then swapping to a compact crankset (50/34) or swapping to a 32t large sprocket at the back would make it about 15% lower gear, this of course presumes that the derailleur can handle that. A better solution would be a compact crankset and a 11-32t cassette, which would result in a 30% lower gear, and is more likely to be in the capacity range of the derailleur.
