I have an old Scott Capa bike. My gears do not engage properly, sometimes when cycling the pedals just spin and gears do not "rachet" when pedalling backwards. I'm told that I need to replace the freewheel/cassette. Firstly is this likely to be correct? Then if so the current part is a Shimano CS-HG30-81 but these do not seem common - coming up as vintage - is it possible to replace with a different modern part and if so what is a good cheap alternative i can get from Amazon or similar. Thanks in advance for the advice for a complete bike novice.

Barnet,
Before replacing anything, a good clean up and lube of all moving parts, including checking that the cables are moving freely.
Can you post some pictures of your rear mech, chain, cassette and if possible the cable.

I agree with @Paulus , i have googled that bike and get no results and the number you listed comes up as a cassette not a hub so a little more information is needed please.
Only thing even close to a scott capa is from a portuguese site for a bike cover so im guessing cape means cape/ bike cover ?

Ebay item 364475069154 should be fine at £9, near enough any 8 speed cassette sufficing.
Cassette removers will be there cheap too.
Decathlon do a fairly cheap one too if you are ok with 12-32. Ebay is a search minefield now, even the cheap ones looking expensive !
For real Shimano, the lower numbers are made of of cheese, so HG41 is better and HG51 usually even better.
HG30 would actually have been fine on a very low use new bike.

@Lbandimpy you don't need to replace the cassette, you've been ill-advised there, basically the freewheel is sticking so that's why its turning without engaging. It is possible to service Shimano freehubs for example if you have the tools, but realistically you'll likely need to replace the freewheel.

Changing the cassette won't help at all - although you may need to consider it as part of a larger service.

What brand/model of wheels do you have?

IF we're talking about a cassette and not a freewheel then it's nowt to do with getting another cassette. It'll be the pawls sticking on the freehub. If it's an old screw on block then it'll need a new one of those or a good clean and spray with GT85 to see if it improves things.
The clue is 'pedals just spin'. They'll still spin even with a new cassette if it's the freehub sticking. Remove the freehub, remove rubber seal on the bottom to give access to the bearings, spray to within an inch of its life with GT85 and pray it works. If it doesn't then consider a new freehub 👍
