These classic style down tube shifters are only £22, I've seen plastic types a lot cheaper around £8. I do like the convenience of STI's, but not to be confused with STD's.

I have a 1994 Dyna-Tech 755Ti, & that's got Ultegra (8-speed) STI
The right shifter is a bit sticky at times, but it all still works well, despite a few 'unscheduled bike-road inter-actions'
