Could you please be more specific about the set up you have now? What type of derailleur do you have, if indeed you have a derailleur? What shifting system do you have?

531 reynolds frame, 27 11/4 inch wheels, its a single lever shift cable pull system, I think i have a suntour derailleur of some sort on the rear, no front derailleur, a shimano 6 speed cassette and a single chainset front.
If as sounds likely it's a 6 speed freewheel block then the only simple way to increase the number of gears is to fit a front gear mechanism and appropriate chainrings
To put a modern cassette and freehub on you'd need new hubs, so probably new wheels, so probably different size hubs and rims and so on and on and on.
If you need to identify any components try these 2 sites. Velobase and Disreali Gears They're both sites of excellent bike porn and brill way to wile away an evening whilst the other half watches her programmes "Despate Bothers" and "Sister and Housewives" or somesuch.
You can also use them to match up components from a particular period to keep your bike contemporary with what you've already got on it.
