Although I use PC's, my knowledge of what makes them tick behind the scenes is a tad limited, so please bear with me. Being a sad, aging game player, I recently found out that there are PC versions of Elite on the 'net, so drooling wioth anticipation of fighting Cobras, Boas and the like again I downloaded a Commodore 64 emmulator (C64 forever) and tried unsuccessfully to download Elite, both from Ian Bell's Elite homepage and from other sources. I unzipped the files and put them in a suitable directory, but they don't seem to want to run.
In simple terminology and with words of not too many syllables, can anyone post a simple idiots guide of how to do this or am I the only saddo on here who's interested in this stuff

I play Oolite ... http://www.oolite.org/ ... not only can you play with only the original ships, but there are also expansion packs that give ones from other sources such as Star Wars. I had a Tie fighter once, good fun but b*gg*r all cargo space.

Do you all realise that you've wiped out all my leisure time for the next 6 months? I LOVE Elite, I had it on the speccy and with a multiface I kept finding more 'pokes' to cheat with LOL

Then i had Frontier on the ST and then the PC, and then finally First Encounters or something - pretty awfull that one

I still have the boxed 3.5 floppy version of Frontier - I keep meaning to see if i can get it working again. Loved the missions in it.

has anyone tried EVE online? I got a bit bored because it was a tad slow to progress - maybe i should give it another go?

Ben - could I possibly ask for the link also?

Eve online is strictly for pvp players or folks who can handle repetitive tasks as the developers tend to concentrate on the player versus player element. They have just introduced planetary interaction which is just setting up mining and production bases and logging in regularly to kick off another round of mining which is rather boring. Mind you Elite was somewhat repetitive with only a handful of missions or at least the version on the 8 bit micros was.

Elite 2 was definitely better for the added missions.

There was a documentary on a while back about Braben and Bell when they created Elite and how they squashed down into the limited memory of the 8 bits, part of a series about british techy stuff.

OK new question.
Downloaded Oolite and have been spending far too much time playing it. Am now 'competent' and have a fully loaded ship.
Only problem is, I am now getting the following messgae from Ad-Watch, part of the Adaware anti-malware software I run;

"Ad-Watch Live has blocked the process oolite.exe(2312) from starting on your system. The process has been identified as VirTool.Win32.Obfusticator.hg!b1 (v) "

I had Adaware running on the PC before I downloaded Oolite and haven't changed any settings since said download, and I use Kaspersky antivirus software.

Help please!

What they said on oolite boards. False positive.
I gavr up on adaware as it tended to list large quantities of tracking cookies which were mostly harmless.

Thanks Ian, for putting it in plain english! From reading the posts on there I thought I was going to be formatting C:\ and reloading Windows, which I really can't be a***d to do! I think I'll look at different adaware-catcher software, or just let Kaspersky do it as I think it's built in.
'Dangerous' here we come!

oolite is good, but if you can find a copy, try and get hold of Elite: The New Kind by Christian Pinder. It's a faithful reproduction of the original, that was reverse engineered from the C64 version I think. Unfortunately, it was so close to the original that it was eventually pulled for copyright infringement.

It's also a lot easier on system requirements than oolite.
