Thank you for the link Cathryn, this looks as if it is a signposted route which takes all the navigational problems out of a cycling holiday.

I hope to find an alternative to cycling through Lyon by taking a more direct route to Valence. I am having a great time using Google Earth and my GPS.

I've been looking at the web page, and in the French language part there are detailed maps of the route. The maps show that only a small part is ready (maps dated between December 2007 and June 2008) and the rest is still a project which they hope to have completed by the end of the year.

I watched a short video by the Swiss tourist board about their cycle routes and they were very positive about the impact cyclists had on the local economy. The route from Geneva to the Med is a natural continuation of the Swiss routes and should be very popular when it's ready.

I particularly enjoy the German routes due to their good signposting... let's hope the French follow suite.

I did the stretch from Seysel (sp?) to Geneva. It was pretty much totally unsignposted. Will from this site sent me some leaflets with the two stretches that i was doing on in more detail, very happy to post them if you pm me your address.

It would be pretty easy to buy a 1:200,000 map and trace the route from the website onto the map with a highlighter, we did that as well and it was good. The route itself was good, and I'd recommend it as a route out of Switzerland even if you go elsewhere quickly.

The Swiss bike routes are in a class of their own and heavily used. Fantastic to see!

Thanks for the offer Cathryn, I have downloaded the detailed maps from the link that you suggested and they are pretty clear. Before I leave I'll have different options prepared and then pick and choose my route as I go.
