I've inherited a German EEPC with Linux on and a German keyboard, anyone know if it's possible to change it to English whilst still telling it the Keyboard is German?

On a more serious note, I have no idea about Linux but in my salad days when I was green in judgement I used a PC (have now seen the Mac light) and used to have that with a German keyboard setting at times (switchable from English) although the computer always spoke to me in English. I imagine Linux ought to allow the same.

If it's linux then you can mix & match OS language & keyboard layout to your hearts content, however I have no idea how to do this on what ever Linux distro the EEPC has installed. I know sweet FA about the EEPCs & that's how I want it to say.

Dunno about linux, but on the ships I work on there is some mix and match of Norwegian and english keyboards. No problem swapping the keyboard layout in windows BUT a few of symbols are then in a different location, mostly around the right shift key but I'll asume your keyboard is marked with something other than a '£' symbol on the '3'.
Maybe not a problem for you if you are a touch typist, but I usually end up having to stab several keys before I get the right symbol.

Look at 'Automatic Method' about a third of a page down...

"Go to a terminal: Ctrl-Alt-T and type:

/opt/xandros/bin/locale_dialog

A simple dialog will open with a list of languages. Choose your desired language and press OK buttun (it's the button on the left). The system asks for reboot. Again press OK button (it's the burron on the left). Congratulations!"

If that fails, try the Manual method etc....

GoodLuck!

2loose: Perfect link. worked a treat. It's now all in English and the keyboard is still mapped to German. Brilliant.
