47 seconds in the reporter mentions it to a driver. They cut away to a captioned still shot of Jane Hobbs at 54s.

She doesn't mention texting there and neither does the caption.

'Are you aware a woman was killed 2 years ago on this road by somebody who was driving... does that bother you?'

That article is interesting but seemingly confusing.

It is not clear:

1. whether we are talking disqualification under totting up or some sort of administrative revocation . The reason I say this is that writer refers to system where new drivers have licences administratively revoked
2. Whether this includes using phones hands free or not. If it does, then this will prevent anyone using phone as a sat nav as it is said to cover the use of apps!
3. Whether scheme will ever work - remember this is Failing Grayling after all- his legal reforms failed miserably

If you're caught using your mobile phone whilst driving, they should seize the phone and crush/sell it. Get caught a second time and they should do the same with the car. The only way to change behaviour is hit the selfish bas*ards in the pocket.

And I don't care if it's someone else's car or phone (they can sue the driver for their loss) or if they need the car to carry their sick granny around (they can pay for taxis for her).
I agree, but once again it will not hurt the rich, just the not so well off and the poor.

3 month ban, 6 points and vehicle and phone seized. That would make a huge difference, the 6 points bollocks won't make a jot of difference.
Yes, I'd like to see automatic short bans for certain offences, including this, as used in other countries.

This wont stop the ignorant twats.

Another point is there aren't enough cops to enforce this.

It won't stop all of them, but it may stop some.

I suspect that most people who break the law do so after weighing up the severity of the punishment vs the likelihood of being caught. Even if there is no more chance of being caught than before, the fact that there is now a greater risk of a driving ban if you are prosecuted will likely cause some to think twice.

Doesn't appear to have made much difference yet, seen loads on their phones whilst out and about today.

Yes I've noticed it more and more all over the place.

IMO it's the sign of the times.People do what they want and nothing is done about it.Like mobile phones and red light jumping.

The other day the big lorry parked in the Keep Clear box at Southwark Bridge.Total ignorance.I had my accident there but people are still ignorant or just plainly couldn't give a toss.
