Ever noticed that it's not the unlit, black-clad Ninjas that are the ones who get hit by cars when it's dark?

As others have said, you have to look first before you can see something. Most drivers don't even bother with that most basic check.

We like to create and maintain for ourselves the illusion that our actions increase our safety when our safety is, for far and away the most part, actually in the hands of those who represent the greatest risk to us; the operators of motor vehicles, who kill and main thousands on the roads every year.
Agreed, although reading the thread on "how often do you come off your bike" might make one momentarily question that assumption....

My incidents, as confessed in that thread are the exceptions that prove the "for far and away the most part' piece of the rule

Hmmm, that cyclist wearing the dark clothing at 3 seconds was clearly visible.

Bring a 1+ ton vehicle on the roads that can cause damage to vunerable road users, then you need to drive with consideration, and you need to take responsibility for how you drive said vehicle, it should not be up to others to mitigate against you being a complete and utter numpty.

There was a pedestrian waiting at a zebra crossing Thu night, he was not wearing Hi Viz or Lights, the road was lit up by yellow street lighting.
I saw him, and slowed down to allow him to cross.
Guess what?
Some complete nobber of a driver comes speeding (no way they were doing 30mph) through the crossing and nearly hit the pedestrian.

The complete and utter twunt of a driver

Yes, I have a front light, a rear light, and a yellow waterproof hump backpack cover (mainly because it is waterproof), but beyond that I wear what I like.
It doesn't exactly help with those idiots who think tailgating is acceptable, does it now, and as far as I am concerned if I am going to be hit, it will be by an inattentive idiot who no matter how much of a Space Lemon (my keyboard thanks you for that one  ) you look like will ever see you.
