I rang AgeUK to recommend a plumber in Sheffield to do some plumbing work at my mum's.
They suggested I use the TrustMark website.

Apparently they are government approved (for what that's worth?), no idea what they charge, but I would definitely go by recommendation from a friend first.

Looks like that website could do with some DIY, cos it's down at the moment!

I'd have thought that would make most people more suspicious!

Sorry, no advice to give. I haven't had trades in my house for a long time and both the builder (who did the work for my mortgage) and the window fitter (who fitted all my plastic windows and was the brother of a late best friend) were both crap and utter crap and I wouldn't recommend either.

Unfortunately I'm not doing any building jobs, aside from my own, now so I hope you can find someone trustworthy and suitable.

Look around in your neighbourhood and see who is having similar work done. Bang on their doors early in the evening or at weekends, and get their opinion of the contractors. Most people are delighted to share the trauma and will give you loads of leads.
Good luck.
