Giant cycle parts quality

I'm a bit disappointed about the quality of the cycle parts and consumables on my 1990 Giant Cold Rock MTB. I've had it from new, probably done about 2,500 miles on it over those years (several computers have worn out and died over that time) in all weathers and on all surfaces, including riding across the beach to St Michael's Mount when it was about 2 weeks old, and I've just had to replace the handle bar grips! What were they thinking about, putting on grips which only lasted 22 years? **

I should confess that the chain, sprockets, cables, even the brake blocks, are all still the same as when I bought the bike, and I've only swapped the tyres over to fit City Jets as it's my foul-weather commuter now and it doesn't go very far off road any more.

It's had fugly mud guards fitted, a rear rack, it's a delicate shade of pink in places and much of the steel frame looks all of its 22 years, which is, I believe, why it doesn't generate much interest in the town centre cycle racks, but I love it and would replace it with another unsuspended MTB in a second if anything happened to it.

** Note - there may be a hint of sarcasm involved here. :giggle:

two out of four of our bikes are Giants and we are well pleased. Not so impressed with one of their bar bags though.

Had my Giant MTB since the mid 90’s and it’s still going strong – stored outside in the elements most of the time – a bit of sporadic maintenance – still going strong – never taken it over to the Mount but it knows Newlyn well...

2500 miles in 22 years?. You need to get out more riding and less time posting jibberish on here Norm.

I'm hoping that the replacement frame for my 4yr-old Giant SCR2 will last a lot longer than the first one (assuming they give me one - bike on its way back to them for assessment).

(Mind you, as SCR2s are no longer made, perhaps it won't be an SCR2 that comes back!)

However long it took to get there, I reckon that's pretty good going for a self-maintained hack, so nuts to the lot of you. :giggle:

You've only done 2500 miles on it in 22 years!
It didn't travel very far for about 12 years after '96 (when i first discovered it was possible to purchase motorised bikes) and it's now my beater bike and foul weather commuter.

I could also point out that it has never been my only bike, and the other bikes have put at least 5k miles under their tyres in the past 3 years.

My 90's Diamond Back is going strong - mind you it's seen some action. Been up Snowdon and down when just weeks old, used as a winter commuter for a number of years, done some right serious MTB'ing, crashed it 3 times on ICE at speed, it's been hit by a car and came out virtually unscathed (I didn't).

It is on it's 3rd set of wheels, upgraded rear mech, upgraded Cantis, second big chain ring, god knows how many BB's chains and sprockets. New cables. Oh and a repaint, as 'marble grey' was somewhat 'dated' very quickly.
